About Us

The anthropology of childhood website grew out of collaborative efforts at Utah State University between David Lancy- anthropologist - and past and present students in his anthropology of childhood class. We’re finding that by thoroughly mining the vast archive of material on children and families in history and anthropology,
we can gain insights and a fresh perspective. When one considers children other than white middle class American boys or girls as one’s archetype for purposes of research, theory and practice, the picture changes quickly and many of our most cherished truths about children turn to myths.

The anthropology of childhood website is intended as a source of material for faculty, students and practioners. Included to the left, under “Resources,” you’ll find course syllabi, recommended readings and links to academic and advocacy organizations devoted to children.

Since our goal is to foster and expand the community of individuals who, like us, find an anthropological perspective very congenial, please declare your interest and augment our store of ideas and resources.
